Abstract

Abstract The concept of cultural landscape refers to multi-layered heritage areas shaped by human activity and sustained through continuous interaction with the natural environment. Originating within the discipline of geography, the concept has progressively expanded to encompass spaces shaped by social, economic, and cultural processes that reflect the intertwined relationship between nature and culture. Cultural landscapes embody both the physical and perceptual connections between people and place, carrying significance for the conservation and sustainable management of natural and cultural heritage. In recent decades, national and international approaches to cultural landscape conservation have advanced considerably, positioning the concept as a central theme within heritage literature. The conservation of these areas requires a holistic perspective that integrates physical components with human interactions and the cultural values accumulated over time. In this context, cultural landscapes play a critical role in safeguarding community identity and transmitting cultural heritage to future generations. This study aims to systematically examine the historical development of the cultural landscape concept and to analyze conservation approaches adopted in the global and Türkiye contexts.
