Abstract

In this study, the behavior of heat transfer and entropy generation under forced convection was experimentally investigated in two pipes of different diameters: a 13.7 mm macro pipe and a 2.74 mm mini pipe. Based on the second law of thermodynamics, entropy generation due to heat transfer, frictional entropy generation, and total entropy generation were calculated. System performance was also evaluated using second-law indicators such as the Bejan number and Entropy number. Experimental studies conducted in a Reynolds number range of approximately 6000–17000 revealed that while the dimensionless entropy generation due to heat transfer decreased with increasing Re in both pipes, the frictional entropy generation significantly increased in the mini pipe. Total entropy generation decreased with increasing Reynolds in the macro pipe but continuously increased in the mini pipe. Bejan number analysis showed that frictional effects dominate entropy generation in the mini pipe, whereas heat transfer is more dominant in the macro pipe. Although high surface-to-volume ratio in mini pipes enhances heat transfer, it also leads to greater frictional losses, reducing second-law efficiency. Therefore, a multi-objective design approach considering both thermal and viscous effects is recommended for system optimization.
