Abstract
This study analyzes populism not through macro-level dynamics such as economic crises, identity politics, and cultural polarization, but as an “economy of emotion”: the modern subject's lack of recognition within a crisis of representation, and the resentment this lack produces, transformed into a bond with the populist leader. Populist ideology's power stems not from rhetorical skill but from the promise of salvation offered to a subject suffering representational deprivation and a hunger for recognition. The populist leader is proposed to be evaluated as a “simulacral messiah”. Defined through Baudrillard's theory of simulation, this concept frames an illusion of security that seems to restore the subject's lost wholeness and continuity, yet delivers this only through dependence on the leader's image. The leader's claim to voice the people functions as a simulacrum concealing the subject's deficiencies in the pursuit of belonging, recognition, and visibility. For the study's thesis, the leader's messianic character constitutes a Baudrillardian simulacrum operating through a dual mechanism: dissolving political agency within the leader's image, while rendering the people's grievances and unmet demands invisible at the sign level. Crises thus function not as problems to be resolved, but as power technologies enabling the reproduction of messianic dependency.
