Abstract

The relationship between per capita income and income inequality is one of the most debatable topics in economic literature. Income inequality is often linked to various negative social and economic outcomes, particularly reduced economic growth. Most empirical studies indicate that income inequality hampers growth. One of the premise studies on this subject is undoubtedly that of Simon Kuznets (1955). This study aimed to test the existence of an inverted U-shaped relationship between income inequality and per capita GDP, as predicted by Kuznets' hypothesis, specifically for Turkey during the period 1980-2023. The dataset for this study was obtained from the World Inequality Database (WID) and the World Bank. The analysis, conducted under three different functional forms, revealed a U-shaped relationship between real per capita income and income inequality in Turkey. Using the ARDL model, the findings point out that economic growth does not act as a mechanism to reduce income inequality at every stage in Turkey. This result indicates that the effects of growth on income distribution do not happen automatically and spontaneously. The study's findings contribute to the literature by offering important implications for income inequality, particularly in developing economies.
