Abstract

The green economy approach is based on the protection of the environment and the efficient use of natural resources. Forestry is considered one of the principal sectors through which the green economy, can be implemented in practice. This study examines the reflections of the green economy approach on forestry in Türkiye, the current practices within the sector, and its role in combating climate change within this context. In this qualitative study, relevant scientific articles, together with documents obtained from the General Directorate of Forestry and the General Directorate of Nature Conservation and National Parks, were examined through the document analysis technique and evaluated using descriptive analysis. The findings indicate that green forestry jobs in Türkiye, aimed at mitigating and adapting to climate change, include afforestation, erosion control, conservation and rehabilitation activities, forest fire prevention, waste management, and ecotourism activities. Forestry activities such as afforestation, rehabilitation, and carbon sinks, when integrated with carbon markets, ecosystem payment mechanisms, circular bioeconomy practices, and nature-based solutions, contribute to the creation of sustainable feedback loops by promoting green employment, while simultaneously supporting forestry activities. The extent of these protected areas demonstrates that conservation policies are focused on large scale and ecosystem-based management approaches. Furthermore, the size of protected areas, the budgets allocated to these areas, and the increasing incidence of forest fires emphasize the strategic role of forestry in the green economy and climate change mitigation. The study highlights the importance of green forestry jobs within the green economy model and reveals that scientific studies addressing the relationship between forestry and the green economy remain limited in the existing literature.
