Abstract

Medicinal and aromatic plants are gaining increasing interest and their areas of use are expanding due to their positive effects on human health. Recent research indicates that these plants hold significant potential not only in traditional treatment methods but also in the pharmaceutical and functional food industries. In this context, Aronia melanocarpa, one of the high value-added species that can be utilized in forest ecosystems, stands out for its lipid fractions as well as its rich phytochemical compounds. This study investigates current research on the composition, biological effects, and usage areas of lipid fractions obtained from the Aronia melanocarpa plant. It has been determined that Aronia lipids contain bioactive compounds such as omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acids, phytosterols, and tocopherols, which possess antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, cardioprotective, and metabolic regulatory effects. These properties enable Aronia to be utilized as an active ingredient in natural drugs, functional foods, and dermocosmetic products. Consequently, vegetable lipid fractions emerge as valuable biological resources in both the development of functional foods that support human health and the formulation of therapeutic pharmaceutical products. Therefore, a more comprehensive investigation of the biochemical properties of Aronia melanocarpa is of great importance. In particular, studies focusing on increasing the bioavailability of lipid compounds derived from the plant and evaluating these compounds in effective formulations for human health should be expanded. Integrating natural resources like Aronia into sustainable production models will contribute to both the conservation of ecosystems and the support of public health. In this scope, evaluating Aronia melanocarpa as a multi-purpose forest product has the potential to support forest biodiversity and provide sustainable economic contributions to rural development.
