Abstract

This study presents a comprehensive material-level characterization of rice husk and sunflower stalk as potential supplementary raw materials for particleboard manufacturing, with industrial wood chips used as a reference material. To evaluate their suitability in terms of raw material selection and process safety, proximate composition analyses (moisture, ash, protein, dietary fiber, and cellulose), elemental composition, total oil content, fatty acid profiling, self-ignition behavior, and surface morphology were systematically investigated. The results revealed that sunflower stalk exhibits properties much closer to traditional wood chips in several parameters compared to rice husk. Scanning electron microscope observations confirmed that the porous structure of sunflower stalk could offer similar advantages to wood chips in terms of adhesive penetration and mechanical interlocking during board production. Self-ignition tests further revealed distinct thermal stability profiles among the materials. Rice husk exhibited ignition at lower temperatures and shorter exposure times, whereas sunflower stalk showed no ignition under the tested conditions. Overall, the findings highlight sunflower stalk as a promising supplementary lignocellulosic resource whose chemical, morphological, and thermal characteristics approach those of conventional wood chips. This study provides a fundamental characterization framework that can support future particleboard manufacturing trials and formulation optimization involving agricultural residues.
