Abstract
Objective: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of conventional cigarette and electronic cigarette use among medical students at Sivas Cumhuriyet University, to identify associated sociodemographic and environmental factors, and to delineate distinct smoker profiles to inform targeted interventions. Methods: A cross-sectional online survey was conducted among 333 medical students between January and March 2025. Data on demographics, smoking habits, social influences, and attitudes towards tobacco products were collected. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, Chi-square tests, and Kruskal-Wallis H tests. A cluster analysis was performed to identify distinct profiles among students who smoke. Results: The prevalence of current smoking was 28.5% (n=95), with a significant increase observed across academic years (p<0.001). A significant association was found between smoking status and both family history (73.7% of smokers had a smoking family member vs. 56.9% of non-smokers, p=0.004) and peer influence (90.5% of smokers had smoking friends vs. 50.7% of non-smokers, p<0.001). E-cigarette use was reported by 23.5% of students, with 2.1% being dual users. Cluster analysis of smokers revealed three distinct profiles Conclusion: Smoking remains a significant public health issue among medical students, heavily influenced by social environment and academic stress. The identified smoker profiles demonstrate that the population is not homogenous, necessitating a multi-pronged intervention strategy. Recommendations include integrating stress management and tailored cessation programs into the medical curriculum and developing cluster-specific interventions to effectively address this "medical education paradox."
Öğrencilerin %23,5'i e-sigara kullanırken, %2,1'i ise her iki ürünü birlikte kullandığını ifade etmiştir.
