Abstract

Objective: Çorum, located in Turkey’s Central Black Sea Region, hosts a rich variety of wild edible mushrooms, making their collection and consumption a common traditional practice. However, morphological similarities between edible and toxic species increase the risk of mushroom poisoning, especially among uninformed individuals. This study aimed to assess the knowledge and attitudes of emergency department patients’ relatives in Çorum regarding wild mushroom consumption. Material-Method: This cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted using a questionnaire developed based on relevant literature and the region's socio-cultural and geographical context. The survey, containing both open- and closed-ended questions, was administered through face-to-face interviews with voluntary participants aged 18 and above who accompanied patients admitted to the emergency department. Results: This study was conducted with a total of 461 participants, including 231 women (50.11%) and 230 men (49.89%), through the administration of a structured questionnaire. Statistically significant differences were identified between participants' attitudes toward consuming and collecting wild edible mushrooms and their gender, educational status, place of residence, and employment status. Conclusion: This study reveals that individuals possess traditional and ethno-mycological knowledge regarding the collection and consumption of wild edible mushrooms, and that this level of knowledge is influenced by demographic factors such as gender, educational status, place of residence, and occupation. It is important for healthcare professionals to be aware of the prevalent dietary habits in the regions where they work, as this knowledge plays a key role in raising public awareness and preventing risky behaviors.
