Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the concept of digital inequality in sports clubs in the context of access to technology and fan participation; to reveal the effects of infrastructural, socio-demographic and economic differences on the fan experience. Document analysis, one of the qualitative research methods, was used in the study. Within this scope, national and international academic articles, book chapters, official documents, and market analyses published on the topics of digitalisation, fan participation, and strategic approaches in sports management were systematically examined. The data were analysed using content analysis; similarities, differences, and recurring themes were evaluated using a holistic approach. The study determined that supporters' levels of digital participation are influenced by multidimensional factors. Firstly, it was found that infrastructural and regional differences create sharp inequalities between urban and rural areas. Socio-demographic variables such as income, age and education were found to play a critical role in digital access and participation; high-income, young and educated fans were found to participate more actively in digital content. In terms of fan participation forms, significant gaps were observed in live broadcast viewing, e-ticket usage, social media interaction, participation in virtual events and access to premium content. Furthermore, it was found that clubs' strategic approaches are decisive in shaping digital inequality; while low-data-consumption applications, free content provision, and mobile-friendly solutions create an inclusive effect, strategies focused solely on revenue deepen inequality. To reduce digital inequality, it is necessary to expand high-speed internet access, increase infrastructure investments in rural areas, develop content tailored to the socio-demographic characteristics of supporters, and strengthen digital literacy. In this way, sports clubs will be able to increase supporter participation and achieve an inclusive digital transformation by strengthening the social function of sport.
