Abstract

This study aims to determine the metaphorical perceptions of special education teachers regarding the Individualized Education Program (IEP) and the concept of collaboration. The research was conducted using the phenomenology design, one of the qualitative research methods. The study group consisted of 168 teachers working in special education schools and special education classrooms within primary and lower secondary schools in Ankara. The data were collected through an online metaphor development form and analyzed using content analysis. The data were analyzed using content analysis, and coding was carried out independently by two researchers. Intercoder reliability, calculated through the Miles and Huberman formula, was found to be 91% for IEP and 88% for collaboration. The findings showed that teachers produced 81 different metaphors related to the IEP and 122 different metaphors related to the concept of collaboration. Overall, the results indicate that teachers perceive IEP as an individualized and structured instructional program, while viewing collaboration as a multi-stakeholder, integrative process essential for effective educational practices. In this context, the findings indicate that IEP and collaboration are often perceived by teachers as separate constructs rather than as integrated processes.
