Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the mediating role of psychological resilience in the relationship between self-confidence and academic procrastination, based on the assumptions of Social Cognitive Theory. The study was conducted with the participation of 350 university students enrolled at a foundation university. Within the scope of the study, which was based on a correlational survey methodology, participant data were collected through both online and face-to-face questionnaire methods. Specifically, the “Self-Confidence Scale”, “Academic Procrastination Scale”, and “Psychological Resilience Scale” were used in the data collection process, and the structural validity of the sca-les was tested using the AMOS program. In addition, the SPSS statistical package and the PROCESS Macro extension were utilized to test the hypotheses forming the main framework of the study. The findings revealed a negative relationship between self-confidence and academic procrastination (r = −.16, p < .01), and a statistically significant positive relationship between self-confidence and psychological resilience (r = .43, p < .01). Furthermore, psychological resilience was found to significantly reduce academic procrastination (B = −0.301, p < .001, 95% CI [−0.464, −0.138]) and to play a mediating role in the relationship between self-confidence and academic procrastination. These findings indicate that, within the framework of Social Cognitive Theory, the processes of reciprocal determinism and self-regulation emphasized by the theory play a prominent role in the relationship between self-confidence and academic procrastination through psychological resilience. Based on these results, several implications and suggestions for future research have been proposed.
