Abstract
During the Ottoman period, foundations (waqfs) were significant institutions responsible for the provision of essential social services such as education, healthcare, and social welfare. Women, particularly the wives and mothers of sultans, established foundations and commissioned the construction of various social service structures. One such structure is the Hâce Nevfidan Mosque. Nevfidan Başkadınefendi, the wife of Sultan Mahmud II, was also known for her charitable works. She directed the revenues allocated to her towards philanthropic activities through foundations, enabling the restoration of structures such as mosques, fountains, and madrasas. In the literature, the Hâce Nevfidan Mosque, located at Hatap Gate in Eminönü, is often confused with the Çürük Elma Mosque, which is situated in the same region. It is known that the mosque was initially constructed by Hâce Hatice Hatun, but was later repaired and restored by Nevfidan Başkadınefendi. Following this restoration, the mosque became known by the name of Hâce Nevfidan Başkadınefendi. Historical records indicate that the mosque was affected by the fires that occurred in İstanbul over time, especially during the significant fires of 1901 and 1903, which led to its reconstruction. The mosque is one of the examples of multi-storied (fevkani) mosque constructions from the Ottoman period. The revenue generated from the shops located on the lower level of the building was used to cover the mosque’s expenses. Architecturally, the mosque was built on a pentagonal plot, with shops and toilets located on the ground floor. In 1959, as part of a decision to widen Eminönü Square, the mosque, like many other buildings, was demolished. The aim of this study is to determine the past location of Hâce Nevfidan Mosque and reveal its historical process by examining the historical records and maps and integrating them into geographic information systems software.
