Abstract

This study examines the growing significance of the relationship between presidents and their advisors in modern politics, and the impact of this relationship on power dynamics, through the lens of Dyadic Power Theory (DPT). As politics becomes increasingly personalized and leader-centered, presidents have emerged as central figures in decision-making processes, while advisors have assumed more influential and strategic roles. The study first outlines the core assumptions of DPT, which argues that power balance in dyadic relationships is shaped by factors such as dependency levels, competencies, and interactional dynamics. It then applies this theoretical framework to analyze various case examples of president-advisor relationships. These cases reveal that advisors often go beyond offering mere technical support, evolving into actors capable of steering and even transforming political processes. In the final section, the study highlights potential challenges these relationships pose for legitimacy and accountability within democratic systems, and addresses the methodological limitations encountered in researching such dynamics.
