Abstract

This study aims to gain in-depth knowledge of the literature on archaeotourism and to provide a holistic evaluation of the literature based on this information. For this purpose, studies related to archaeotourism were examined using a hybrid systematic analysis method. A total of 62 studies on archaeotourism were analyzed using the PRISMA protocol, and the technical and scientific aspects of the studies, such as their theories, contexts, and methodologies, were evaluated using the TCM (Theory-Context-Method) and ADO (Antecedents-Decisions-Outcomes) frameworks. Additionally, the findings of the studies and their relationships with each other were investigated. In summary, the findings revealed that archaeotourism is addressed from different perspectives by various disciplines (such as archaeology, tourism, and cultural heritage) and is also considered a socio-economic development tool in developing regions. The studies examined indicate that archaeotourism is a holistic approach with economic, cultural, and social dimensions that contribute to sustainable development. However, to be effective, it requires strong management policies, funding, stakeholder collaboration, local participation, infrastructure, and technological support, and planned implementations that enhance the visitor experience.
