Abstract

ABSTRACT The insufficient recognition of the architectural and cultural values embodied in rural settlements worldwide has led to inadequate conservation efforts and the gradual deterioration of traditional environments shaped over centuries. Rural architectural heritage, formed under limited resources, constitutes a significant source of knowledge as it reflects the lifestyles, production techniques, and cultural practices of past societies. However, the loss of this heritage is not limited to the physical degradation of structures; it also weakens the connection with collective memory and leads to a decline in cultural diversity. This study aims to develop a site-specific, holistic, and applicable conservation model by examining national and international approaches to the preservation of rural architectural heritage. The district of Vezirköprü in Samsun Province, selected as the study area, presents a significant potential with its multi-layered historical background, traditional architectural fabric, and natural landscape values. Nevertheless, a considerable portion of this heritage has been damaged or completely lost over time due to insufficient conservation awareness, inappropriate interventions, loss of function, and lack of maintenance. Within the scope of the research, field studies, current condition analyses, and survey applications were conducted; based on the obtained data, the conservation problems in the urban conservation area were identified. As a result of the study, a holistic conservation and planning approach encompassing physical, administrative, and social dimensions is proposed in order to ensure the sustainability of cultural heritage.
