Abstract

In semi-arid cities, the urban heat island is not only a temperature increase associated with built-up density, but also a complex urban climate issue shaped by surface moisture, irrigation, open spaces, topography and nighttime cooling capacity. This study aims to evaluate hourly and seasonal air temperature differentiation between the urban area of Şanlıurfa and its surrounding local environments. Hourly mean, maximum and minimum temperature data for 2023, together with daily total precipitation data, were used. Taking the city station as the reference, raw and elevation-adjusted temperature differences between the urban station and surrounding stations were examined. The findings show that the city station generally remained warmer than its surroundings, although raw temperature differences were partly affected by elevation. The persistence of the urban thermal effect after elevation adjustment indicates a distinct urban heat island in Şanlıurfa. This effect becomes stronger particularly during nighttime and at minimum temperatures, suggesting that urban heat risk is not only related to daytime extreme heat, but also to nocturnal heat retention and limited nighttime cooling. The results indicate that climate-sensitive planning in semi-arid cities should integrate shading, ventilation, cool surfaces, water-efficient green infrastructure and open-space arrangements that support nighttime cooling.
