Abstract

This study aims to provide a comprehensive examination of how netnography is implemented in communication research. Rather than focusing solely on the prevalence of the method, the research seeks to make visible the methodological choices and reporting practices that shape its application. To this end, a two-stage analysis was conducted on publications identified in the Web of Science database using the keywords “netnography,” “communication,” and “media.” In the first stage, a bibliometric analysis reveals the increasing visibility of the method over time, the diversification of journals and disciplinary contexts, and a strong concentration around social media environments. In the second stage, the methods sections of selected studies were examined through thematic analysis, comparing data collection strategies, analytical tools, researcher positioning, and ethical reporting practices. The findings indicate that although netnography is increasingly adopted within the field of communication, shared methodological standards have not yet become fully established. A significant portion of the studies rely on social media–based digital traces, while levels of ethical transparency and methodological justification vary considerably across publications. This suggests that the method is expanding quantitatively while still remaining in a process of methodological consolidation. By bringing bibliometric trends and practical applications into dialogue, the study provides a comparative framework for evaluating the use of netnography in communication research and offers guidance toward more transparent and consistent future practices.
