Abstract

This study comparatively examines how the generative visual AI model DALL-E 3 represents four core social concepts -justice, freedom, power, and peace- across language (Turkish vs. English) and location (Turkey vs. USA). The research aims to identify how linguistic and geographic differences shape visual outputs and to assess these outputs in terms of algorithmic cultural hegemony. We generated 32 prompts (four prompt formats per concept) and collected 2,048 images (16 outputs per prompt, 4 images per output). From this corpus, 32 images were selected via maximum variation sampling and analyzed using a three-layer critical visual discourse method: (1) iconographic description (Panofsky), (2) semiotic myth analysis (Barthes), and (3) discursive contextualization (Hall, Foucault). Findings indicate that DALL-E 3 consistently appears to impose Western-centric conventions as a default reality, pointing to a process we term “iconographic narrowing” -a measurable visual homogenization. English prompts tend to yield images with higher institutional and political agency, whereas Turkish prompts more frequently generate apolitical, pastoral, and spiritual motifs, suggesting the reproduction of an orientalist binary. We also identify “algorithmic semantic evaporation”, whereby the historical and political depth of local concepts is reduced to aesthetic background within model outputs. Gender analysis points to a tendency of hyper-stereotyping, with agency concentrated in masculine bodies and women depicted as passive aesthetic objects. The study suggests that generative AI functions as a cultural authority that reinforces global power hierarchies and points to the need for interventions such as data transparency and localized model development.
