Abstract
This study comparatively examines the contributions of Antonio Gramsci’s theories of hegemony and praxis and Louis Althusser’s theory of Ideological State Apparatuses (ISAs) and interpellation to political sociology. The primary aim is to investigate two distinct epistemological orientations in the Marxist debate on the superstructure and to elucidate the irreducible theoretical tension between their approaches to the ontology of social change and the political potential of agency. Methodologically, the research is grounded in a critical comparative conceptual analysis that focuses on a limited set of core categories to ensure analytical depth. Within this framework, Gramsci’s praxis-centered understanding of collective action, rooted in humanist Marxism, is contrasted with Althusser’s structuralist, anti-humanist theory of ideology along the axes of structure–agency and hegemony–reproduction. The analysis demonstrates a clear divergence in their conceptualizations of the political potential of agency: while Gramsci theorizes agency as a terrain of struggle that harbors counter-hegemonic possibilities, Althusser conceptualizes the subject as surrounded by an apparent autonomy that ultimately secures structural inertia through objective necessity. Nevertheless, both perspectives converge in rejecting economism and in affirming the central and autonomous role of ideology in the functioning of social order. The study concludes that Gramsci’s lens provides critical tools for analyzing political contingency and the exceptional dimensions of power, whereas Althusser’s framework illuminates structural continuity and the mechanisms of power reproduction. Taken together, their theoretical legacies offer complementary resources for grasping the dialectic between structural determination and freedom.
