Abstract
Health literacy refers to individuals’ capacity to access, understand, appraise, and use health-related information and is a key public health indicator associated with health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the health literacy levels of adults aged 18 years and older living in Tekirdağ, Türkiye, and to examine associated sociodemographic factors. In this cross-sectional descriptive study, the sample consisted of 509 volunteers recruited through a stratified sampling approach from Family Health Centers located in the central district and other districts of Tekirdağ. Data were collected using the Turkey Health Literacy Scale-32 (TSOY-32) and a sociodemographic information form developed by the researchers. Of the participants, 13.6% had inadequate, 41.7% problematic-limited, 29.3% sufficient, and 15.5% excellent general health literacy. Health literacy scores differed significantly by education level, employment status, and age group (p<0.05), whereas no significant differences were found by sex or health insurance type. Participants diagnosed with a chronic disease had significantly lower health literacy scores than those without a diagnosis. The findings suggest that health literacy cannot be understood solely as an individual competency; it also has a health inequality dimension associated with indicators of social position, including education, employment, and age.
