Abstract

This study presents an academic review of Taxing Africa: Coercion, Reform and Development. The book examines tax systems in Africa within their historical, political, and economic contexts, analyzing the central role of taxation in development, governance, and the construction of social legitimacy. The review underscores the work’s comprehensive treatment of the effects of the colonial legacy on contemporary tax structures; the dynamics of the transition from an ‘age of aid’ to an ‘age of tax’; injustices in the global tax order; the social implications of both large and small taxes at the national level; and the ‘fair share’ problem in extractive sectors. This review highlights the work’s contributions to the academic literature and to the pursuit of fair and inclusive tax reform in Africa, while also assessing its potential to inform future research and policy-making.
