Abstract

This study aims to examine the relationship between women’s levels of emotional reactivity, emotional needs, and motivations for having children. This cross-sectional and analytical study was conducted with 416 women. Data were collected using the Emotional Reactivity Scale, the Emotional Needs Scale, and the Motivations for Having Children Scale. Pearson correlation and linear regression analyses were performed. Emotional reactivity was positively associated with emotional approach (r=0.378; p<0.001) and emotional avoidance (r=0.306; p<0.001). The Emotional Reactivity Scale showed low-level positive correlations with the positive (r=0.172; p<0.001) and negative (r=0.150; p=0.002) subdimensions of motivation for having children, and moderate positive correlations with emotional approach and emotional avoidance. Linear regression analyses indicated that emotional reactivity significantly predicted emotional approach (β=0.378; p<0.001; R²=0.143), emotional avoidance (β=0.306; p<0.001; R²=0.094), positive motivation for having children (β=0.172; p<0.001; R²=0.030), and negative motivation for having children (β=0.150; p=0.002; R²=0.022). Emotional reactivity can be considered a psychological variable associated with women’s emotional needs and motivation for having children. The findings suggest that emotional reactivity has a moderate level of explanatory power for emotional needs and a low level of explanatory power for motivation for having children. Considering women’s emotional sensitivity in the evaluation of parenting decisions may contribute to counseling and educational processes, particularly within midwifery practice.
