Abstract
This study examines the poem “The Debate of Winter and Summer” from Divanu Lugati’t-Türk within the framework of Northrop Frye’s mythic system. It aims to reveal how the seasonal imagery, animal symbols, and bodily representations in this 11th-century debate text correspond to Frye’s seasonal mythoi. The central research problem is whether the opposition between winter and summer demonstrates a structural alignment with the mythoi of summer/romance and winter/irony-satire. Adopting a qualitative approach, the text is analyzed through archetypal elements, and the findings are interpreted in relation to Frye’s model and Jung’s concept of the collective unconscious. The results show that imagery associated with summer, such as birdsong, reproduction, and fertility, corresponds to the romance mythos, while winter imagery, such as snow, cold, and bodily suffering, aligns with irony and satire. The poem’s debate form functions as a structural device that dramatizes the cyclical relationship between these mythoi. The absence of a definitive victory reflects an archetypal structure based on continuity rather than resolution. The study demonstrates that Frye’s model remains applicable beyond its Western origins, offering evidence for the universality of archetypal symbolism.
