Abstract

This study explores the complex relationship between talent acquisition, workforce dynamics, and key economic indicators in the maritime sector, with a particular focus on 22 coastal countries of the European Union. Through a rigorous bibliometric analysis combined with non-parametric statistical methods, the research identifies significant correlations between the supply of seafarers and essential labor indicators, such as unemployment rates and labor force participation levels. While the analysis shows moderate associations between the availability of seafarers and broader economic variables—such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and the rapidly growing ocean economy-based service trade—these relationships do not achieve statistical significance. This research shows that we urgently need to improve our approach to managing people and driving policy in particular ways to address the current labor problems in the maritime industry. These developments can enhance the field’s resilience and sustainability, even as the ups and downs of global trade continue to change the game.
