Abstract
The Maraş aba is a traditional men's outer garment made waterproof by closing its pores through the effects of heat and moisture, resulting in a felted texture. It differs from the abas of other regions with its rose patterns, body consisting of two pieces lengthwise (şah), armpit slits, neckline tongue, and black-and-white striped ground weave. The felting process gives it a rigid texture. In weaving, a "motif" is each of the elements that come together to form a decorative work and constitute a unity in themselves. Symbolic motifs, beyond being mere ornaments, are elements documenting society's life with their cultural, social, religious, philosophical, and mythological dimensions whose roots go back to prehistory. The classification and recording of motifs are essential for revealing the cultural structure. Motifs added to weaves with the belief of protecting the wearer from negative energies can be designated as protective symbols. This study is structured using descriptive analysis and iconographic analysis approaches from qualitative research methods, with the aim of identifying and recording the protective and prayer-oriented motifs on Maraş abas through object analysis, visual documentation, and literature/archive reviews. As a result of the research, objective ornamental symbols woven for protective purposes on Maraş abas—such as the hand (elçek), three tughs (üç tuğ), frog, wolf's mouth (kurtağzı), scorpion, sugar lump (şekerpare), blue bead, amulet (muska), cross ornamentation, and knot—were examined. In addition, motifs added with a prayer intent—such as the hobble (bukağı) meaning loyalty, the star believed to bring abundance and luck, the lamp as a symbol of wisdom and guidance, the fertility leaf as a symbol of fertility, ivy and chain with the theme of proliferation, the samovar containing a prayer for hospitality and family unity, and the inscription "Mashallah" intended for protection from accidents and misfortunes—were identified through visual examples, and their symbolic meanings in the context of traditional craft were explained and recorded alongside the literature.
