Abstract

For Ottoman individuals, the concept of retirement was a concept they would only encounter in the 19th century. For Ottoman subjects living in previous periods, life was consisted of participating in production within the group they belong, obeying the sultan's orders, and performing various services expected from them. An Ottoman individual belonging to the taxpayer class of common people would work, produce, and perform the services expected from them until the end of his life as long as his physical condition permitted, without knowing the concept of retirement. The situation was a little better for the Janissaries. Janissaries who reached a certain age, after exhausting and dangerous struggles would end their actual military service, could retire and do different jobs, with the condition that part of their ulufes remain with them. The central structure could even appoint such Janissaries as managers of the state's financial enterprises. Thus, the central Ottoman State, which continued to receive services from them, offered the Janissary servants the opportunity to maintain their privileged status as experienced and loyal servants and to improve their financial situations. Our study aims to make some determinations about the situation of such Janissaries based on Ottoman archive documents.
