Abstract
This study analyzes the strategic role of the Adana School of Agriculture in the institutionalization and modernization of agronomical knowledge during the integration of the Cilicia (Çukurova) basin into global market networks at the onset of the 20th century. Characterized by fertile soil and a unique microclimate, Çukurova was conceptualized from the late Ottoman era into the early Republican period as the state’s “cotton granary and an laboratory agriculture”. Within this framework, the research problematizes how a localized educational institution facilitated the rational transformation required by this specific ecological and economic landscape. Spanning the historical trajectory from the Second Constitutional Era to the early Republic, the School of Agriculture functioned not merely as a pedagogical unit but as an application center for transferring modern agrarian techniques, mechanization, and scientific crop breeding to regional cultivators. Utilizing qualitative research methods, the paper examines the decisive impact of the school’s curriculum and experimental fields in translating regional agricultural potential into macroeconomic objectives. The findings demonstrate that, despite financial constraints and resistance from traditional production paradigms, the institution successfully standardized strategic crop patterns-specifically cotton and citrus-thereby aligning local practices with global standards. Consequently, the article offers an original perspective on the role of agricultural education as a basin-oriented development model within the history of Turkey’s economic modernization.
