Abstract

Background: The impacts of climate change and water scarcity are becoming increasingly visible across different segments of society. This situation places women who have been forcibly displaced due to economic, social, and political reasons in a progressively more vulnerable position in terms of their living conditions. Objective: This study aims to provide a general framework for understanding how women migrants are affected by socio-ecological risks associated with climate change and water crises. It also seeks to raise awareness of their vulnerabilities in relation to climate policies and to contribute to discussions on gender-based inequalities. In this context, the Southeastern Anatolia Region of Türkiye was selected as the focus area, as it is one of the regions where water scarcity is most evident and where Syrian migrants are densely concentrated. Method: The study is a review that does not rely on primary data collection but is based on the systematic examination of existing knowledge. National and international academic literature, field reports, official datasets, and secondary statistical data were analyzed. Sources addressing migration, gender, climate change, and access to water were selected, and the data were evaluated through content analysis. To better understand the vulnerabilities of Syrian women migrants in Southeastern Türkiye, the study draws on an intersectionality approach and feminist vulnerability theory to conceptually examine the multidimensional effects of gender-based inequalities on access to water. Results: The Southeastern Anatolia Region is vulnerable due to limited water resources and demographic pressures. This situation restricts Syrian women migrants’ access to water, hygiene, and health services, deepening their social and economic vulnerabilities. Conclusion: Although regional initiatives have contributed to improving water and sanitation services, existing policies and infrastructure gaps remain insufficient. Future strategies should incorporate a gender-sensitive perspective, strengthen local and international cooperation, and integrate nature-based solutions with participatory governance mechanisms.
