Abstract

This study investigates the mediating role of humor-based coping in the relationship between self-compassion and anxiety. Self-compassion, characterized by treating oneself with kindness and understanding, serves as a vital psychological resource that enhances resilience and reduces anxiety. Humor, conversely, is conceptualized as an adaptive coping strategy that facilitates emotion regulation abilities in the face of challenging life events. In the present study, 302 participants completed the Self-Compassion Scale–Short Form, the anxiety subscale of the Brief Symptom Inventory, and the Coping through Humor Scale. Data analysis was conducted using Jamovi 2.6.2 and the Medmod module for mediation analysis. Mediation analyses revealed a significant and negative association between self-compassion and anxiety. Moreover, humor-based coping demonstrated a partial mediating effect on the relationship between self-compassion and anxiety. Overall, these findings suggest that addressing self-compassion and humor together may be effective in anxiety management processes and may contribute to psychotherapeutic interventions.
