Abstract

In this study, the commonly accepted negative view of art in Plato's philosophy is discussed. Considering Plato’s conceptualization of art in other dialogues, his criticism of art—particularly in the Republic dialogue—may appear inconsistent. This article takes this inconsistency or contradiction as a richness of Platonic philosophy and opens the door for art to enter the house of philosophy. For this purpose, the study is based on the following three concepts: tekhné, poiesis and kalon. Together with the dialogues centered on art (Ion, Phaedrus, Greater Hippias and Symposium), these three concepts are evaluated according to their relationship with art.
