Abstract

Since its advent, discussions surrounding cinema have engaged with fundamental subjects of philosophy. Dualities such as movement and time, the sensible and the intelligible, and the real and the false are the most prominent examples. Contemporary philosophy, in particular, has shown an intense interest in cinema. This interest has manifested not merely in using films to exemplify philosophical arguments, but also in examining the very essence of cinema as a philosophical problem in itself. We can now speak of a broad literature on the philosophy of cinema. It would not be wrong to see Badiou and Deleuze as milestones in this philosophy. The privileged role that both philosophers accord cinema can only be understood by looking at their philosophies. The aim of this study is to show that Badiou and Deleuze's differing views on cinema are a symptom of a fundamental disagreement based on the concept of the Multiple. While Badiou and Deleuze agree on the independence of cinema, they have constructed this commonality in different ways. Depending on whether the multiple is considered actual or virtual, the concept of the event differs between these two philosophers, leading them to draw different ethical and aesthetic conclusions from cinema. In contrast to Deleuzian cinema, where the image is approached on an ontological plane, Badiou's cinema is situated in a void, presenting a duality as a procedure of truth or an artistic configuration.
