Abstract
This study aims to examine 12th grade high school students’ perceptions of the Turkish education system through metaphors. The study was conducted with 104 students studying at various high schools located in the Yüreğir, Seyhan, and Çukurova districts of Adana during the second semester of the 2024–2025 academic year. A qualitative approach was adopted, and the phenomenology design was employed. Data were collected through an open-ended form prepared by the researcher, which asked students to complete the statement “The Turkish education system is like … because …”. The metaphorical expressions obtained were analyzed using content analysis, and the 83 metaphors produced by the students were classified into nine categories and three themes (positive, negative, and neutral) based on their semantic similarities. The findings indicate that students’ perceptions predominantly cluster around the negative theme (55.9%). Metaphors in this theme describe the education system as restrictive, exam-oriented, competitive, and insensitive to individual student needs. Examples include “Prison,” “Race,” “Washing Machine,” “Black Hole,” and “Factory.” Positive-themed metaphors (34.5%) associate education with development, effort, progress, and supportive processes; examples include “Seedling,” “Garden,” “Staircase,” and “Playground.” The neutral theme (9.6%) characterizes the system through more structural and operational metaphors such as “Subway Line,” “Mirror,” and “Airport.” Gender-based analysis revealed that male students generated relatively more negative metaphors compared to female students. Overall, the results show that students perceive the Turkish education system as having both developmental and challenging aspects. The findings highlight the importance of strengthening the education system through approaches that consider individual differences and support holistic learning, in line with recent curriculum development and reform initiatives.
