Abstract
In this research the importance of integration principle in the design of pedestrian oriented streets is elaborated. A definition of "street" and "public" are given considering the streets as public open spaces in urban areas which embody public life. Its physical, functional and social characteristics are given, and elaborated on the enhancing role of the design on the quality of public life and allow meaning to develop. Conflicts which occur over the use of the streets between the users are discussed on physical, environmental, functional and social levels. Bu araştırmada yaya oryantasyonlu sokak tasarımında bütünleştirme ilkesinin önemi konu alınmıştır. Sokakların toplumsal yaşama sahne olan kentsel açık alanlar olduğu görüşü benimsenerek öncelikle sokak ve toplum tanımı yapılmıştır. Sokağın fiziksel işlevsel ve sosyal özellikleriyle ilişkisi belirtilmiş ve sokak tasarımının toplumsal yaşamın niteliği üzerindeki güçlendirici etkisi ile sokağa kazandırdığı anlam tartışılmıştır. Sokaklarda otomobilin yarattığı sorunlar fiziksel, işlevsel çevresel ve sosyal düzeylerde tartışılmıştır. Yaya sokakları, tasarım ilkelerine göre sınıflandırılmış ve tanımlanmıştır.
