AHMET MİTHAT EFENDİ'NİN KARNAVAL , HENÜZ 17 YAŞINDA ve VAHROMANLARINDA BATI MEDENİYETİ ELEŞTİRİSİ

Abstract

The Tanzimat Reform Era has an important place with its main lines inthe life of the Turkish nation with the changes and developments it caused inthe fields of politics, community and literature. Ottoman communityunderwent series changes in accordance with the state's efforts ofwesternization. The new life style emerged as a result of westernizationstarted to affect the existing Ottoman society structure in a negative way.Besides, the malfunctions in the society's own structure have caused damageto the social structure. Ahmet Mithat Efendi often compared the Ottoman social life and the European one, and criticised it. This approach may bedefined as the trial to let the reader appraise the right and the wrongsimultaneously.Though they are fiction, Ahmet Mithat Efendi's novels are of greatimportance as they show the reflections of conceptions belonging to theWestern civilization on Ottoman society and how the values of the Turkishsociety changed with the perception of the Western civilization. In thisrespect, particularly novels Karnaval, Vah and Henüz 17 Yaşında(Carnival, Vah and At the Age of Seventeen), where Ahmet Mithat Efendidiscussed this issue were analysed in terms of the criticisms towards theWestern civilization. Thereby, Ahmet Mithat Efendi's way of perception ofthe Western civilization and his criticisms were tried to be detected via hischosen works.

Tanzimat Dönemi, ana çizgileriyle siyaset, cemiyet ve edebiyatalanlarında göstermiş olduğu değişme ve gelişmelerle Türk milletininhayatında önemli bir yere sahiptir. Bu dönemde Osmanlı toplumu, devletinBatılılaşma çabaları doğrultusunda derin değişimler yaşamıştır. Batılılaşmaile gelen yeni hayat tarzı, mevcut Osmanlı toplum yapısını olumsuz yöndeetkilemeye başlamıştır. Bunun yanında toplumun kendi bünyesindeki sosyalaksaklıklar da sosyal yapının hasar görmesine neden olmuştur. Ahmet MithatEfendi çoğu zaman, Osmanlı sosyal hayatı ile Avrupa sosyal hayatınıkarşılaştırarak tenkit etmiştir. Bu yaklaşım, okurun doğruyu ve yanlışı aynıanda değerlendirmesini sağlamaya çalışma olarak da ifade edilebilir.Kurmaca metinler olmasına rağmen Ahmet Mithat Efendinin romanları,Batı medeniyetine ait kavramların Osmanlı toplumundaki yansımalarını veTürk toplumuna ait değerlerin Batı medeniyeti algısıyla nasıl değiştiğinigöstermesi bakımından önem taşımaktadır. Bu bakımdan çalışmamızdaAhmet Mithat Efendinin, ağırlıklı olarak özellikle bu konuyu ele aldığıKarnaval , Henüz 17 Yaşında ve Vah adlı romanları, Batı medeniyetineyönelik eleştiriler açısından incelenmiştir. Böylece Ahmet Mithat EfendininBatı medeniyetini algılama biçimi ve eleştirileri seçilen eserlerden yolaçıkılarak tespit edilmeye çalışılmıştır.
