Middle school teachers’ opinions about using Vustat and Tinkerplots in the data processing in middle school mathematics

Abstract
The purpose of this research is to examine the views of middle school mathematicsteachers about the usability of VUstat and TinkerPlots software in data processinglearning in the Curriculum of Mathematics Teaching in Middle School (5th, 6th, 7thand 8th grades). In the study, the phenomenology design from qualitative researchpatterns was employed. The study group was determined by maximum variationsampling method of purposeful sampling methods. The number of middle schoolmathematics teachers in the study group is 14. Pre-Interview Form, Activity Forms,Software Evaluation Forms and Focus Group Interview Form were used as the datacollection tool in the research. The analysis and interpretation of the data was done bycontent analysis. The results of the research show that teachers have some problemsregarding the use of technology in teaching mathematics and that VUstat andTinkerPlots software can be used in statistical teaching even though they have certaindeficiencies. Some suggestions were made according to the results of the research.
Özet
Bu araştırmanın amacı, ortaokul matematik öğretmenlerinin, VUstat ve TinkerPlots yazılımlarının, Ortaokul Matematik Dersi (5, 6, 7 ve 8. Sınıflar) Öğretim Programında yer alan veri işleme öğrenme alanında kullanılabilirliği ile ilgili görüşlerini incelemektir. Araştırmada, nitel araştırma desenlerinden olgubilim (fenomenoloji) deseni benimsenmiştir. Çalışma grubu, amaçlı örnekleme yöntemlerinden maksimum çeşitlilik örnekleme yöntemine göre belirlenmiştir. Çalışma grubunda yer alan ortaokul matematik öğretmeni sayısı 14’tür. Araştırmada veri toplama aracı olarak Ön Görüşme Formu, Etkinlik Formları, Yazılım Değerlendirme Formları ve Odak Grup Görüşme Formu kullanılmıştır. Verilerin çözümlenmesi ve yorumlanması içerik analizi ile gerçekleştirilmiştir. Araştırma sonuçları, öğretmenlerin matematik öğretiminde teknoloji kullanımına yönelik bazı sıkıntılar yaşadığını, VUstat ve TinkerPlots yazılımlarının belli bazı eksiklikleri bulunsa da istatistik öğretiminde kullanılabileceğini göstermektedir. Araştırma sonuçlarına göre bazı önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
