Turkish and Azerbaijani prospective teachers' attitudes to their profession

Abstract

The education system of a country has a crucial effect on creating a qualified work force. Teachers who are the most important part of the education system play an important role in the development of society. In this context, in order for teacher candidates to perform their profession more effectively and successfully, they need to be raised as well-equipped individuals in terms of professional subject knowledge and pedagogical formation; with positive attitudes towards their profession. This study investigated the attitudes towards the teaching profession of the Turkish and Azerbaijani students studying at the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University (ASPU) in terms of gender, grade and preference order variables. “Personal Information Form” and “Attitude towards the Teaching Profession Scale” were applied to the teacher candidates. As a result of the findings obtained from the study, it was concluded that the variables of gender, grade and preference order had a significant effect on the attitudes of the teacher candidates towards the teaching profession. Özet

Eğitime önem veren çağdaş toplumların farklı alanlarda yetişmiş, nitelikli insan gücüne sahip bireylerden oluştuğu görülmektedir. Nitelikli insan gücünün yetiştirilmesinde bir ülkenin eğitim sistemi çok etkili olmaktadır. Eğitim sisteminin en önemli parçası olan öğretmenler toplumun gelişmesinde önemli role sahiptir. Bu bağlamda öğretmen adaylarının mesleklerini daha etkili ve başarılı bir şekilde uygulamaları için, mesleki alan bilgisi ve pedagojik formasyon açısından donanımlı, mesleğe karşı olumlu tutumlara sahip bireyler olarak yetiştirilmesi gerekmektedir. Bu çalışmada Azerbaycan Devlet Pedagoji Üniversitesi’nde (ADPÜ) öğrenim gören Türk ve Azeri öğrencilerin öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumları cinsiyet, sınıf ve tercih sırası değişkenleri açısından ele alınmıştır. Araştırmadan elde edilen bulgular sonucunda; öğretmen adaylarının öğretmenlik mesleğine yönelik tutumları üzerinde cinsiyet, sınıf ve tercih sırası değişkenlerinin önemli bir etkisinin olduğu sonucuna ulaşılmıştır. Toplumun ihtiyacını karşılayabilecek öğretmenlerin yetiştirilmesi için mevcut eğitim sistemine ek olarak elde edilen sonuçlar doğrultusunda önerilerde bulunulmuştur.
