Abstract

Even though the public presence of women in Anatolia has been associated with the newly-founded Republic, it is seen that there was a focus on the social status of women in the last century of the Ottoman Empire. The Westernisation and modernisation movement, which was observed in many areas of life during the Tanzimat period, was also influential in the woman question. One of the first women to write on the issue is Fatma Aliye Hanım. Fatma Aliye Hanım, who deals with the problems of women regarding marriage, divorce, professional life and education, presents pioneering ideas within her social milieu. Fatma Aliye Hanım herself is quite an important figure as she is considered to be the first female novelist in the Ottoman Empire. Nonetheless, this study does not concentrate on her biography but seeks to examine one of her novels Refet, among many others in which she produces strong heroines, within the framework of the social status of women in the Ottoman culture during the Tanzimat period relating it to female independence and social visibility owing to her profession. Refet, who is the protagonist and the titular heroine, is a young woman who has been orphaned at a young age but has got education to become a teacher despite dire conditions. The fact that she obtains financial independence by earning her living by a socially acceptable profession and therefore not preferring to be a “wife” but maintaining her life as a “self-sufficient woman” is of utmost importance and exemplary for women to construct their identity independent of a male counterpart. In this context, this study concludes that Teacher Refet is an autonomous woman who does not passively comply with the practices of the patriarchal culture. This study consciously avoids employing the word “feminism” because Fatma Aliye’s thought is fed upon the Islamic tradition, and thus necessitates a relatively traditional interpretation. Therefore, the aim of the study is not to discuss whether Refet is a feminist or to discuss feminism in the Ottoman Empire, but, by means of the close reading method, to emphasize her importance as a liberated and autonomous female figure within the framework of the Ottoman women’s movement.
