Perceptions of Future and Social Support of the Mothers of Children with Mental Disability: The Roles of Counselors

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine perceived future and social support of mothers caring for their children with mental disabilities. Part of the purpose of the study was to identify role and functions of psychological providing services to children with mental disabilities and their families. This qualitative study was conduct with 11 mothers whose children were utilizing services from Denizli Guidance and Research Center. Data collection was done by semi-structured interviews with the mothers. Interviews were tape-recorded and then transcribed. Qualitative descriptive analysis was utilized with the transcribed texts for data analysis. Majority of the participating uncomfortable societal perceptions of their children (stigma) and that they did not receive enough support from their spouses, family members or from individuals outside their family networks. They also indicated that caring for the children was done almost solely by the mothers which led to significant sense of burn out. On the other hand, the participants reported that they were satisfied with the support they received by individuals working their children in educational institutions. While some mothers reported ambiguity and worry about the future of their children others envisioned employment, marriage, care by siblings or residential care for their children in the future. Finding of the study showed that mothers from the diagnosis of their children on needed financial assistance and psychological and educational help regarding the condition of their children and the services available to them. Thus the results showed that psychological providing services for children with disabilities could attend to these needs by conducting psycho-educational groups, providing referral services and in-depth information regarding conditions of children with disabilities.

Özet

Bu çalışmanın amacı zihinsel engelli çocuğa sahip olan annelerin sosyal destek algıları ve annelerin çocuklarının gelecek planlamalarına ilişkin görüşlerinin incelenmesidir. Bu bağlamda zihinsel engelli çocukların devam ettiği eğitim kurumlarındaki psikolojik danışmanların rol ve sorumlulukları üzerinde durulmuştur. Bu amaçla Denizli Rehberlik ve Araştırma Merkezi'nden hizmet alan 11 engelli çocuk annesi ile nitel araştırma yöntemlerinden yarı yapılandırılmış görüşme yöntemiyle veri toplanmıştır. Görüşmeler ses kayıt cihazıyla kayıt edildikten sonra yazıya dökülmüş ve betimsel analiz tekniği kullanılarak analiz edilmiştir. Araştırmada, annelerin toplumun bakış açısından rahatsız oldukları, çoğunlukla eş, aile ve aile dışından bireylerden sosyal destek almadıkları görülmüştür. Çocukların bakımı anneler tarafından yapılmaktadır ve annelerin birçoğu tükenmişlik yaşadıklarını ifade etmişlerdir. Genellikle çocuklarının devam ettiği eğitim kurumları ve bu kurumlarda çalışanların belirtmişlerdir. Annelerin çocuklarının geleceklerine ilişkin belirsizlik ve kaygı yaşadıkları, bazı annelerin ise çocukları için iş, evlenme, kardeşlerinin bakması, kurum bakımı gibi planlamalar yaptıkları görülmüştür. Araştırma bulguları doğrultusunda annelerin tanılama aşamasından itibaren, çocuklarının engel durumu, maddi, psikolojik ve eğitim desteğine ulaşma konularında bilgiye ve yönlendirmeye ihtiyaç duydukları söylenebilir. Çocukların devam ettiği eğitim kurumlarında çocukların eğitsel, mesleki ve kişisel gelişimleri için özellikle annelere yönelik bilgi verme, yönlendirme, psikoeğitim grupları, grup rehberliği etkinlikleri yapmaları önerilebilir.
