Abstract

Türkiye ranks last in the OECD regarding the insurance penetration rate. Therefore, it is crucial to determine the factors that are effective on the insurance industry in Türkiye. In this context, the study focuses on the possible effects of foreign trade and investment expenditure on the insurance industry. It tests the relationship between the variables with data for the 1983-2021 period with A-ARDL cointegration and the Toda-Yamamoto causality test. The empirical findings are: (i) Investment expenditure, foreign trade, and the insurance industry are cointegrated. (ii) Investment expenditure and foreign trade affect the insurance industry positively in the long-run but negatively in the short-run. (iii) The impact size of the long-run coefficients is more dominant than the short-run coefficients. (iv) There are bidirectional causality relationships between the variables. These results prove the validity of the feedback hypothesis for the insurance industry in Türkiye. These findings show that the variables interact with each other.

Özet

Son yıllarda sigortacılık sektöründe kayda değer ilerlemeler yaşanmasına rağmen Türkiye, sigorta penetrasyon oranı açısından OECD içerisinde en düşük yoğunluğa sahip ülke olarak dikkat çekmektedir. Dolayısıyla Türkiye için sigortacılık sektörü üzerinde etkili olabilecek faktörlerin belirlenmesi önemlidir. Bu bağlamda çalışma, yatırım harcamaları ve dış ticaretin sigortacılık sektörü üzerindeki olası etkilerine odaklanmaktadır. Değişkenler arasındaki ilişki, 1983-2021 dönemine ilişkin verilerle A-ARDL eşbütünleşme ve Toda-Yamamoto nedensellik testleri vasıtasıyla sınanmaktadır. Ampirik bulgular şu şekildedir: (i) Yatırım harcamaları, dış ticaret ve sigortacılık sektörü eşbütünleşiktir.
