Abstract

Adolescence is a critical period in terms of acquiring knowledge, skills and behaviors related to health, and adopting the right health behaviors for individuals. Failure to understand the changes and problems experienced in this period, and failure to make appropriate interventions in a timely manner cause adolescents to tend to risky behaviors. In this study; it is aimed to emphasize the importance of risky health behaviors in adolescence, to reveal the current situation in the world and in Turkey, and to draw attention to the importance of relationships with parents, peers and school environment in the prevention of these behaviors. More than 1.5 million adolescent and young adult deaths between the ages of 10-24 were reported in 2021, while 1,397 deaths in adolescent girls and 2,304 deaths in adolescent boys were observed in Turkey in 2019. Injuries, violence, self-harm, maternal conditions are the leading causes of death among adolescents and young adults worldwide, while road injury, violence and self-harm are the leading causes of death among adolescents in Turkey. Studies have shown that individuals who have good relationships with their parents, love their school, and have a positive peer environment tend to show less risky health behaviors. In order to reveal and change these behaviors and their underlying causes, to develop positive health behaviors, necessary interventions should be carried out together with all relevant institutions, and it is very important to use health education effectively in this process.
