Abstract

A gamified version of a problem in which pupils apply their varied cognitive abilities is referred to as a mind game. Since 2013, students in Turkey have had the opportunity to take an elective course in mind games, which covers a wide range of games and puzzles. Studies in the literature show that mind games provide important contributions to the development of cognitive skills such as problem-solving, communication, and reasoning, as well as affective and psychomotor skills of working individually and as a team, developing a positive attitude towards problem-solving, monitoring, and evaluating their own development process and self-regulation. However, the potential of these games within the context of mathematics and a direct connection between these games and teaching mathematics are seldom examined in studies. By incorporating mind games into mathematics courses, particularly when teaching concepts and operations, students would be able to acquire a favorable attitude toward the subject. The factors puzzle designed within the scope of this study allows students to make sense of and practice the subject of factors, multiples, divisors, and common divisors of natural numbers in mathematics. In the current study, the potential of mind games—particularly the factors puzzle—in the teaching of mathematics is addressed, and several recommendations were offered to improve the puzzle.
