Abstract

Functional foods are defined as foods that have health-improving/improving or disease-preventing effects in addition to their nutritional value. The concept of functional food, which emerged in Japan for the first time in 1984, has become very interesting today. Mental health is a concept that includes emotional, psychological and social well-being. It is thought that functional foods may have an effect on improving mental health, which is important at every stage of life from childhood and adolescence to adulthood. There are many functional foods included in the diet in daily life. Some of these functional foods are; fermented foods, curcumin, garlic, green tea, chocolate and omega-3. In particular, the anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant properties of the aforementioned foods can help improve mental health. Alzheimer's disease, dementia, stress, anxiety and depression are some of the mental disorders that functional foods can improve. In today's world where the prevalence of mental illness is increasing, it is stated that functional foods may have an important place in the treatment. In addition, functional foods can be beneficial not only in the treatment but also in the prevention of these mental diseases. The aim of this study is to compile the effects of functional foods on mental health in the light of current literature.
