Abstract

In 910, the foundations of Cluny Monastery were laid under the administration of St. Berno with the rule of St. Benedict with the donation of property by William I, Duke of Aquitaine, and Count of Macôn. The monastery had ,increasingly, the opportunity to spread over a wide geography with the support of the papacy assurance and aristocratic families. Thanks to its successful abbots, the monastery had a great resonance in the world of Medieval Europe. The clergy trained by Cluny Monastery were active characters in the political and cultural structure of the period. Among these clergymen, Peter the Venerable was born in 1090/92 as the seventh child of Montboissier family. Peter the Venerable, who was educated in Cluny, was elected abbot of Cluny Monastery in 1122 and assumed the management of the monastery. Peter the Venerable not only managed the monastery with his sharp mind and intellectual personality, but also managed to make himself known with his cultural activities. This study mentioned Peter’s attitude towards the events he encountered and his work against Muslims, Jews and heretics. The Abbot, who saw it necessary to intervene in the progress of Islam, was in favor of taking urgent measures against Jews and heretics in the Catholic World. It was targeted to draw the unique profile of Peter of Cluny, who was removed from the shadow of his fellow Bernard of Clairvaux. Cluny Monastery in general and Abbot Peter’s administration and intellectual character were evaluated in particular. In the article, the use of meaning Muhterem was preferred as the equivalent of the Latin Venerabilis title used for the Abbot Peter. In addition to Latin sources, making use of research works in various modern languages, it has been focused on the aspect that left his mark in the context of history, as well as on the theological discussions of Peter the Venerable which contributed to the monastic literature.

Özet

Cluny Manastırı’nın temelleri, 910 yılında Akitanya Dükü ve Macôn Kontu I. William’ın mülk bağışıyla Aziz Berno idaresinde Aziz Benedikt Kuralı prensibiyle atılmıştı.
