Abstract

For centuries, the slave trade was highly lucrative for Italian merchants who travelled to the East. The formation of the Mongol Empire, together with economic and demographic growth in Europe, contributed to an increase in both the demand for slaves and the supply of human commodities. Trade expanded in parallel with the growing number of journeys undertaken by Western merchants to the East. The development of a structured trading system along the Black Sea coast enabled Genoa and Venice to strengthen their commercial relations with major regional powers, namely the Golden Horde and the Mamluks of Egypt. This article constitutes a preliminary critical mapping of a larger research project and aims to explore the relationship between Italian commercial migration and the slave trade in the Venetian settlement of Tana, located at the mouth of the Don River, which represented the easternmost outpost of the Latin trading system in the 13th and 14th centuries. Drawing on a well-established historiographical tradition and Venetian documentary sources, this study aims to reconstruct the perception of slavery within the unique context of the Golden Horde, where Western urban mercantile and Eastern nomadic elements interacted. Although many of the conclusions of this research remain tentative, preliminary findings suggest that slaves were not only a primary and highly profitable resource for Italian merchants, but also a direct and effective means of accessing and understanding an ethnically and culturally unfamiliar context.
