Abstract

Shared figures appear in the sacred texts of the Abrahamic religions through both convergent and divergent narrative traditions. One of these figures, Enoch, is referred to by different names such as Hanok, Enoch, Uhnûh, and Idris in Jewish, Christian, and Islamic traditions. However, information about Enoch in the canonical sacred texts is quite limited. In contrast, narratives centered around Enoch's ascension to heaven, his wisdom, and his celestial position are more extensively developed in Talmudic, tafsir (Quranic exegesis), and apocryphal literature. This study comparatively examines the narratives concerning the Enoch/Idris figure within the framework of Jewish, Christian, and Islamic sources. The research first addresses the fundamental information found in the Tanakh, the New Testament, and the Quran; then, it evaluates how these narratives have been expanded upon in tafsir literature and apocryphal texts. Within this framework, the Book of Enoch, traditionally attributed to Enoch, is comparatively analyzed alongside Talmudic literature, tafsir sources, and selected apocryphal biblical texts. Furthermore, the association of the Enoch/Idris figure with the Hermetic tradition has been evaluated within the framework of later commentary and wisdom literature rather than early sacred textual dataThe study concludes that the figure of Enoch/Idris receives only limited representation in canonical sacred texts; however, narratives concerning his ascension and his characterization as a figure endowed with wisdom gradually developed into an increasingly elaborate tradition within later exegetical and apocryphal literature.
