Abstract

The school starting age in Turkey was regulated by Law No. 6287, and 60-month-old children started school in the 2012-2013 school year. The aim of this research is to examine the experiences of 60-68-month-old children who started school and their parents in depth in line with their own views. In this phenomenological research, the data were collected through semi-structured interviews in the 2020-2021 school year. 23 children and 20 parents participated in to the study. The findings are presented in three categories: reasons for sending children to school, experiences and suggestions based on their experiences. Parents sent their children to school due to 4+4+4 regulation or their own initiative. The participants had various experiences within family, teacher and peer interaction during school life because of starting school at an early age. In the primary school, the experiences caused by the individual development of children not reaching sufficient maturity were also reflected in the middle and high school. Participants suggested the necessity of preschool education, reformulation of the school starting age, and child-friendly learning environments. The findings suggested that regulating the school starting age on a scientific basis, compulsory preschool education, differentiating the instruction, and arranging the curriculum in accordance with the children.
