Abstract

The United States has maintained its dominance over the system for a certain period of time in the new world order. In particular, the increasing inward-looking practices, passive stance in the face of common problems and interest-oriented foreign policy approach with the Donald Trump administration have led to more questioning of the legitimacy of the United States within the system. The change in the power of the United States within the system has increased the rhetoric that China can become a substitute power. This study, based on the principle of relative gain, will analyse the power struggle between the USA and China within the international system from the framework of neorealist theory. The competitive relationship between China and America will be examined within the framework of Graham Allison's concept of the Thucydides trap concept. Within the scope of the Thucydides trap, this study will be emphasize that the war that started on an economic basis between the United States and China has reached a more serious dimension by showing its impact in other areas. This study shows that the multi-faceted threat perception felt by the United States in the face of China's continuous rise within the system makes bilateral relations more fragile, while also reveal the argument that power competition draws states into the Thucudides trap.

Özet

ABD yeni dünya düzeni içerisinde sistem üzerindeki hakimiyetini belirli bir süre devam ettirmiş bir ülkedir. Özellikle, Donald Trump yönetiminden sonra artan içe dönük uygulamalar, ortak sorunlar karşısında pasif duruş ve çıkar odaklı dış politika anlayışı ABD’nin sistem içerisindeki meşruiyetinin daha fazla sorgulanmasına yol açmıştır. ABD’nin sistem içerisindeki gücünde yaşanan değişim Çin’in ikame güç olabilme yönündeki söylemleri arttırmıştır.
