Abstract

Objective: Our aim was to study the correlations of several treatment variables with residual symptoms and outcome measures such as level offunctioning, disability and quality of life in bipolar patients with the clinical features of an interepisode period. Methods: Interepisode bipolar patients (N=JOO) were included in the study. Patients were interviewed with the Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia (SADS) and, as outcome measures, the Brief Disability Questionnaire (BDQ), the Quality of Life Enjoyment and Satisfaction Questionnaire (Q-LES-Q) and the Global Assessment Scale (GAS) were administered. They were also asked questions to check the frequency of regular assessments, by a physician, adequate usage of mood stabilizing agents and usage of other psychotropic drugs. Results: Adequate usage of mood stabilizers corresponded with higher GAS scores. Usage of antipsychotic drugs corresponded with lower GAS scores, higher BDQ scores and more severe manic symptoms. in the same way, usage of antidepressant drugs corresponded with more severe depressive symptoms. With respect to quality of life, there was no significant difference between the groups. Conclusions: Adequate usage of mood stabilizers may improve the level offunctioning. in patients that use antipsychotic drugs there were more residual manic symptoms, a lower level of functioning and a higher level of disability. In interepisode bipolar disorder, a decrease in subsyndromal symptoms and an improvement in level of functioning by some other specific therapeutic strategies may add to the benefits provided by mood stabilizing prophylaxis.
