Abstract

Universities are formal education institutions where students gain various knowledge, skills, values, and attitudes in line with the fields they study. Universities today undertake many missions such as research, public service, and entrepreneurship, in addition to their educational mission. The research mission, which is one of the most important indicators of universities, is supported by academicians and students. In this context, universities strive to create a project culture in their institutions by providing their students with research skills. The main program in Turkey where university students can carry out projects apart from the courses they are studying is the 2209-A University Students Research Projects Support Program carried out by the Scientist Support Department of TÜBİTAK (Turkish Scientific and Technological Research Council). In this context, the research aims to reveal the knowledge and awareness of teacher candidates studying in different programs of the education faculty about TÜBİTAK and undergraduate projects. The sample of the research consists of 204 teacher candidates studying in five different programs of the Faculty of Education of the University of Erciyes. The data collection tool of the research consists of a five-point likert-type questionnaire consisting of 24 closed-ended questions developed by the researchers. A survey model, one of the quantitative research methods, was used in the research. The data of the research were analyzed by using statistical analysis in SPSS 16.0 program. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the knowledge and awareness of teacher candidates about undergraduate projects and TUBITAK is not high in general. However, it was concluded that the knowledge and awareness of those who took the project preparation course in education, applied for an undergraduate project, took part in any project or participated in any activity of TÜBİTAK were higher.
